Foothills Rider Profile: Adrian Cecchetto

Championship season is here, and we couldn't be prouder to put the spotlight on Adrian Cecchetto. This is no ordinary accomplishment: Adrian has been selected to represent Canada on the international stage at the 2026 FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC). Earning a place on a national team is one of the proudest milestones a young rider can reach — a spot Adrian earned through his results, his consistency, and countless hours of hard work over the qualifying season. He will compete as a Pre-Junior, a division open to athletes ages 14 to 16 over fences up to 1.30m, when the Championships run July 28 to August 2 at Flintfields Horse Park in Traverse City, Michigan.

NAYC is far more than a regular horse show. It brings together top junior riders from across North America to compete for individual and team medals, representing their countries in a format modeled on senior international championships. For an athlete Adrian's age, being selected to a national team is a key moment in his junior career. Adrian rides and trains here at Foothills Farm, and we sat down with him to talk about his journey, his partnership with Chino, and the road that brought him here.

What is your first memory of horses?

Galloping for the first time. I was on K-Lo and he was galloping in the outdoor ring. I had a smile from ear to ear — it was so much fun.

When did you start riding?

I started with summer camp with my friend Holly when I was 4 years old. I rode recreationally until COVID, then made the decision to concentrate solely on riding and competing.

Tell us about the horse you are riding this season?

Chino — registered as Chiridor — is a 13-year-old dark bay Oldenburg. He's quirky in a good way, super fun, and always keeps me on my toes. He's very affectionate as well.

What advice would you give to a rider whose goal is to make it to Young Riders?

Never give up. You can do anything if you don't get discouraged and keep working hard.

What are your goals for next year?

Learn more about developing and training young horses.

What was the biggest challenge you faced this show year?

Readjusting my position after a growth spurt. I grew so fast that I had to almost re-learn my position.

What is the most important thing you learned while working toward this goal?

Always keep learning and adapting. Change is good.

What is one thing you will never forget about this show season?

Being able to show at the World Equestrian Center in Florida, and really developing a bond with Chino.

Do you still get nervous before a show?

I get a little nervous preparing, but once I'm on Chino I get excited.

Do you have a role model or another rider you look up to?

I really like Richard Vogel and McLain Ward, but I try to learn from all riders, regardless of their level. Everyone has something to teach.

What advice would you give to new riders just getting into the sport?

Opportunities will come your way with hard work and determination.

What have horses taught you?

Patience — which I'm still trying to develop… lol!

If you could take one piece of tack or equipment to a deserted island, what would it be?

Polos. You can ride a horse bareback and with no bridle, but a polo you can use to treat cuts, wrap legs, and more.
